1. Fierce pop bombshell Britney Spears proved her staying power and fan loyalty. Her explosive ticket sales and additional “Britney: Piece of Me” show demand kicked her to the upper echelon of prime Las Vegas entertainment. On November 5, which was officially christened Britney Day, she was presented with a key to Vegas’ iconic Strip in a splashy ceremony at The LINQ.
2. Reigning “supreme” as 70-year-old soul queen, Diana Ross was one of the biggest living legends to grace a Vegas stage in 2014. Her September 19th Colosseum show, a stop on the “In the Name of Love” greatest hits tour, was sold out.
3. Bye bye Shania, hello Reba, Brooks & Dunn. The Colosseum at Caesars may have bid farewell to solo icon Shania Twain, but it’s keeping its country cool with the “Reba, Brooks & Dunn: Together in Vegas,” residency launching June 24.
4. Iconic Australian pop singer and “Grease” actress Olivia Newton-John began her first Vegas residency, “Summer Nights,” at Flamingo Las Vegas in April. In true Sandy style, the welcome ceremony featured her riding in on a convertible, surrounded by Chippendales dancers dressed as T-Birds. Her ticket sales proved just how hopelessly devoted her fans are to her: she renewed her show contract for an extension through September.
TOP CHEFS
5. Bobby Flay’s Mesa Grill turned 10 October, with Flay offering a special menu to celebrate the occasion. Flay was one of the first star chefs to join the Vegas dining scene, and he’s been serving up his famed Southwest cooking at Caesars Palace for 10 delicious years.
6. In major Las Vegas news, hometown hero Guy Fieri finally got grilling with the opening of Guy Fieri’s Vegas Kitchen & Bar at The LINQ Hotel & Casino. The Strip-side hot spot has Fieri signatures everywhere, from the décor to his Bloody Mary brunch and longtime menu staple, Vegas Fries.
7. Pint-sized powerhouse chef Giada De Laurentiis broke up Vegas’ boy’s club of celebrity chefs. Since her June debut of Giada, she’s had perhaps the most-talked about restaurant in town, enjoying explosive success as The Cromwell’s only dining outlet.
GAME (AND SKYLINE) CHANGERS
8. The High Roller opened in March as Vegas’ biggest attraction ever—literally. The world’s largest observation wheel is a colorful, awe-inspiring new landmark inviting visitors to see Vegas from a new angle. Anchored by The LINQ promenade’s chic boutiques, restaurants and first-to-market shops, the High Roller has helped revitalize the center of the Strip.
9. Targeting a social media-savvy customer, The LINQ Hotel & Casino opened in October with a splashy new infusion center bar, remodeled rooms and plans for several cool venues that will unroll throughout 2015.
10. The spring opening of The Cromwell ushered in a new era of contemporary cool on Las Vegas Boulevard’s boldest corner. The Strip’s only stand-alone boutique hotel introduced audiences to three Drai’s party venues, Giada De Laurentiis’ very first restaurant and swanky new mixology bar, Bound by Salvatore.
LIFE OF THE PARTY
11. Decked out in glam gold and black décor, Liaison at Bally’s set a new precedent as the first LGBT nightclub in a Strip hotel-casino.
12. Thanks to the Spring opening of Drai’s Beach Club & Nightclub, partiers can now live it up day or night with an 11-story rooftop view of the Strip, no less. It’s safe to say nightlife impresario Victor Drai delivered on his promise to make it the most beautiful club in the world.
13. Once again, Caesars Palace is set to stake its claim on the sizzling Strip nightlife scene with the recent announcement of Omnia Nightclub. Operated by Hakkasan Group, Omnia will feature multiple rooms and opulent patio when it opens in Spring.
STRIP SHOWSTOPPERS
14. Construction was finally completed on the extravagant 10,300-square-foot Nobu Villa, the crown jewel suite atop the world’s only Nobu Hotel inside Caesars Palace. Complete with a private terrace, robatayaki grill, and Zen garden, it’s part of the Anthology Collection, and ups the ante for Las Vegas’ best suites.
15. The century’s last sequential date, 12/13/14, was commemorated with free weddings in High Roller cabins. Nearly 100 couples got married or renewed their vows during the memorable promotion, which began at 10:11 a.m. and ended at 12:13 p.m.
